El Alamein. An infamous battlefield, and an army fighting an enemy led by an incredible military opponent, Field Marshal Rommel. Amid the terrible daytime heat, sandstorms and cold nights, the British 8th Army overcame, not least in part by the command of the equally incredible Field Marshall Montgomery. The 8th Army become known as the 'Desert Rats', although that nickname was taken from the 7th Armoured Division, a main component of the Western Desert force.
Made up from men from across the whole of the British Commonwealth, British, New Zealanders, Australians, Indians and South Africans, the 8th had a number of quick victories against Italy in North Africa, until they met their match with the Afrika Korps.
Allied and Axis fought ferociously at El Alamein, Tobruk and Beda Fomm. As the war intensified, and the 8th finally being victorious in North Africa, the fighting spread to Tunisia, and finally to Italy itself.
