British infantry squads were called a section, comprised of ten men and divided into separate rifle group and Bren groups. Sections were led by a corporal armed with a rifle or pistol and a lance corporal who was in charge of the Bren group.
Section members carried ammunition for the Bren, a total of 700 rounds - 25 magazines in all, and all members of the section were armed with grenades.
Canadian infantry sections had a similar organisational structure. All three Canadian infantry divisions were trained for amphibious landing operations, and participated in landings at D-Day, the Breskens Pocket and the Rhine. The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division conducted so many amphibious assaults they earned the nickname ‘The Water Rats’ from Field Marshal Montgomery.
