The Soviet War machine was very adept at adapting already great designs and creating formidable new upgrades from them. The IS-2 was a case in point, made as a replacement for the KV Series tank, superior to its predecessor in every way.
With thick frontal armour, a massive 122mm gun, it's weight was similar to that of a German Panther. The IS-2 was designed as a breakthrough tank, hence the 122mm gun. This was the tank finally that broke through from the Eastern Front and right into Berlin, knocking on Hitler's front door.
