All infantry units rely on heavy firepower, and as such these units have to diversify in terms of firepower, accuracy and battlefield brutality. This Weapons Team are wearing winter fatigues.
The American M1A1 Bazooka was first used in North Africa and on Tarawa in 1942, had two grips and a wooden support and a range of up to 250 yards. The very next year, a new and improved version was issued which removed the front grip and was fitted with an improved electrical firing system. This culminated in the final version, which was was longer at 1.55m with an increased range, up to 300 yards. Used with an M6 HEAT rocket, this gave the infantry the ability to penetrate 76mm of armour at 30 degrees or 110mm at 90 degrees.
Scouting and sniping are a universal military capability, and the US Army have always invested heavily in these areas. Snipers (according to the US Army manual) were there to kill enemy officers, thus damaging enemy morale. Sniper units consisted of two troops - a sniper and a spotter. Both members of a Sniper team had sniper training so the role of spotter was interchangeable.
The US Snipers were equipped with M1903 bolt-action Springfield rifles fitted with a telescopic sight, and were also armed with close-combat weapons such as pistols and shotguns to defend themselves if discovered.
Flamethrowers, an American favourite, right up until the Vietnam War, were used during World War 2, and saw heavy usage in the Pacific as a very efficient means of clearing out tunnels and bunkers. During the D-Day landings, flamethrowers were used extensively in order to open a gap in the fortified lines.
