The Waffen-SS were undoubtedly evil to the core, with their atrocities being both well documented and far reaching, with the consequences of those including the Holocaust echoing through history right up until the present day.
Their discipline, tactical prowess, callous efficiency and loyalty to the Third Reich was without question.
SS troops formed over 38 divisions and other regimental and battalion-sized units, totalling nearly a million men under arms. They were heavily indoctrinated to the Nazi cause, and were universally feared. The relationships between Wehrmacht units and the Waffen-SS were tenuous at best, and fractious at their worst. SS units were reknowned for being both fearless and ruthless, right up until the end of the war.
