Taranto wargaming mat cloth hemmed.  The Battle of Taranto, fought on the night of 11 and 12 November 1940, marked the first successful all aircraft carrier attack in history.

British Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers launched from HMS Illustrious struck the Italian fleet at anchor in the heavily defended harbor of Taranto. Despite anti-aircraft fire and barrage balloons, the slow biplanes crippled three Italian battleships, sank or damaged cruisers, and demonstrated the decisive power of naval aviation.

The attack shifted naval balance, boosted British morale, and influenced naval strategy, foreshadowing carrier strikes such as Pearl Harbor. It also exposed vulnerabilities of battleships in confined waters worldwide.
